Yeah I'll get to it.  Thanks.  W7ZOI suggested I get a picture of a really messy work bench posted, which sounds like an excellent idea.

I suppose we should contemplate a contest or something.

Until then we'll be basket-weaving for a little while longer.

I've been sitting here thinking "who cares what kind of a picture there
is?". But if we gotta have a picture to be cool, a big messy workbench
DOES sound appropriate!

Great picture! Unfortunately, the 'form factor' of the photo is terrible for most any photo other than a scene of a
distant mountain range! It's hard to find a decent 'on topic' photo that will fit. It's barely more than a 'ribbon'
across the top of the page.

Once a photo is uploaded, you can move it around, but you can't reformat it in any way.

So you need a photo that is about 3:12...... Not easy to find.

Group Photo.

I agree the messy workbench sounds great.  Given the aspect ratio of 3:12 of a panoramic view I would suggest a soldering ir

It should be possible to crop a choice jpg to the required format and then upload it.

Michael -

The problem is the picture has to be four times as wide as it is high.

Panoramic? :-)

William Carver,

See the Heathkit VTVM just to the left of the scope top shelf right side?  I have one of those

Creative Photo Manager came with our camera.
It allows re-cropping to almost any height-width ratio.
I assume most other image-software would do the same,
but maybe some don't.

Yaboo now not being democratically or user oriented, we will
have to accommodate the stupendous advancement now imposed
- or relocate.

I am pretty sure that's what Michael meant when he wrote "crop".

I looked at "AF_stages_bench.jpg" (earlier reply) with the idea in
mind of sharply cropping it. I think it could work. One could focus
in on the upper shelf, or the lower bench (maybe that is TOO messy),
or somewhere between.

You don't seem to understand the problem..... Most 'pictures' are 4:5, 4:6, etc.

Cropping is not the problem. Short of taking a panoramic shot of a workbench three or four frames wide by one frame
high ...

You don't need to crop it, think of looking through a mailbox slot into a room. You can see all of the room by moving
your head around, but you can't see the whole room (or wall) at once.

Sorry, enough, not emrfd topical!

I think everyone here who has visited the "neo" page understands the problem.

You can take any square or rectangular picture and crop it to a 1:4
picture that fits. Of course you lose a lot from the picture, but
that's what cropping does. So you must choose one whose content works
when cropped to 1:4. Clearly, a radio tower is not a suitable choice.
Unless you want to tilt your heads. :-)

If it can crop to a 1:4 ratio, then it's good!

Hi, All-

This topic looked a bit boring, but I finally read a few posts
in the thread. Oh pish- it's so darned easy to use a
standard photo editor to crop any picture to 1:4 or any
arbitrary aperture, for that matter. Photo Shop is a
natural for this, many are familiar with it. I personally use
'gimp' in a Linux environment ('graphic image manipulation
program'). Looking at the example photo, I can see
several good 1:4 'windows' I could pull out of that one and
into a new jpeg. I like a window with the signal generator
at the very top and just capturing the bottom of the wood
breadboard. One that captured the Heath QM-1 would be
almost as good. I have one of those, also a Boonton 260A-
love 'em both dearly!

If you guys are not experienced with this sort of photo editing
software, I'd certainly offer to do the capture for the group
and forward it to the moderator. Just let me know, very happy
to help if needed. Also helps to know if Yahoo imposes any
arbitrary file size limit on that skinny graphic- that is easily
implemented if needed using the same graphics program.

In this case the jpeg doesnt need to be cropped before uploading. After the
moderator uploads the picture he can grab it and move it around under the
window, get it looking like he wants it, and then save it. Yahoo does the
cropping for you.
