I got the 146 piece kit for $25.00, it will have about all you will need to start out, don't forget to get the wire from qrp kits, as it is the special enamel coating that is easy to tin the ends, and it comes in 3 colors too.

Hi, I've been wondering about using wire-wrap wire for toroids...does
anyone have any experiences with that?

Three colours now? I didn't see that on the website - that would be
very useful for taking the drudgery out of sorting out trifilar
windings.

For some applications I've used rainbow ribbon cable to wind
transformers for easy sorting. Of course the wire is kind of thin, and
the insulation quite thick in comparison.

For the OP's question, I personally find I use lots of FT50-43, T37-2
and T37-6s. I used to use T50 sizes, but I prefer the smaller cores
where usable. I still tend to use FT50-43s but I keep FT37-43 in the
box too. Lately I've been using FT23-43s for RFCs in VHF projects.

It can't hurt to keep pig-noses and beads too, but I find that I use
them very rarely. I also rarely use -61 material, I probably should use
it more. I do use T50 or T68-7 cores for VFOs and some -10 cores for
VHF work, (unfortunately kits and parts doesn't carry T37 or T25-10 but
-6 works there too, the T25-6 cores are handy for small signal VHF tanks
even if not ideal). I built some antennas using T130-6 loading coils,
and used an FT200-43 for experiments with loop antennas.
