I think this is of interest to RF folks, even if the frequency range stops at 40 KHz!

Things are happening with the AVNA project.  QEX published my article in the May/June issue and I put together a Web page with lots of details.  It is at
http://www.janbob.com/electron/AVNA1/AVNA1.htm
That page also has info on acquiring a copy of the magazine, if you are not a subscriber.  That page includes info for an email reflector for exchanging thoughts on this project.

I have had a lot of fun with this, and it has worked out to be a high quality measurement device for both impedance (R-L-C components) and transmission (input/output devices) measurements from 10 to 40,000 Hz.

I hope this is a useful tool for experimenters.

I enjoyed the article and thought it was one of the better ones in QEX recently. I may give the project a shot so I'm glad to see the web page and discussion group getting set up.

I recently did a Wetherhold filter using 88 mH toroids and did sort of wish for an audio range testing device. And I can see that many component measurements would be useful at RF as well.

Nick, I went around in circles for several minutes trying to get a price for the PCB. Short attention span, after registering once they wanted me to register again.  Have you gotten price for boards? If you intend to order some I'd be happy to share cost with you.

I haven't ordered yet. I stopped short of signing up for an OSH ID, but may do it. I did get signed up for the group and see that at least one guy is going ahead with an order and is willing to distribute the excess, at cost I guess.

I didn't want, but got an OSH ID trying to find out what the price of the boards was. How much was three boards?

hi,
Im building a spectrum analyzer, and got boards from PCway for $5.00 for 5 boards (min order 5)  So my original order of 4 board types ($20) gave me 20 boards and DHL shipping for     $21. or I could had got 3 -4 week shippng for 13
SO 20 boards for $44.  Hard to beat.  I got them in about 4 days.

The boards are $62.60 (free shipping) for 3 of them.

To get prices, you have to click Order Boards which puts them in your cart. A nuisance.

I've never had them make any boards for me, but I've bought quite a few. Excellent service, updates of progress and great quality.

I'm not interested in 3 of them, but if someone puts together a group buy, I'm in.

One thing with a relatively large board from Oshpark is to do what they term a medium run (total of 100 square inches minimum).  This reduces the price per inch to $1, in this case that's $125.20 for 10 boards.

If you can get the largest dimension on the pcb to 100 mm or less, you can get ten boards from PCBway.com for $5 plus $21 DHL express shipping.  This price holds for boards up to 100 x 100 mm.  This board is 122.6 x 65.9 mm so the PCBway price jumps to $15 for ten boards and the shipping is still $21.  That's a total of $36 for ten boards or $3.60 apiece.  If one of you buys ten boards,  you'll probably spend more on postage distributing them to the group than the boards cost.

The $21 DHL shipping charge seems to be the minimum and I think it is good up to about 500 gm (about a pound).  Above that it steps up about every 100 gm.  The most I ever paid for shipping was $38 and that was for 270 boards (most were pretty small) and included a "transaction fee" that I have never been able to figure out but it usually is about 10% of the basic board cost.  I think it includes things like PayPal's or a credit card company's fees and maybe a currency conversion fee.

I have bought several boards from PCBway and I don't think they can be beat for quality and support.  The only time it took me longer than one week from the time I placed the order to receive my boards was when I inadvertently placed my order during the two-week Chinese New Year holiday period.  If you have several board types you can lump them in one order and save on shipping too.   The $5 for ten boards is intended for prototypes.  If you go over the ten count the price jumps.  For example, ten 100x100mm boards cost $5, if you raise the quantity to 20 the price goes to $46.  I don't know what they would say if you tried to order two batches of 10 boards on the same order to get a $10 price for 20 boards and only pay one $21 shipping fee.

I've used PCBway for several years and they are great to deal with and good prices.
However, in the last year or so I've switched to ALLPCB (allpcb.com) for this kind of small board (100mm x 100mm max). They had a deal a few months ago in which you could get 10 boards for $5, shipped!   (OK, add $1.20 for the PayPal fee.)  I knew this deal couldn't last and they've inched it up a bit but you can still get 5 boards (mimimim) for $18- shipped - plus ~$1.60 Paypal fee.  Last Friday night I sent a set of Gerbers to them and I got the boards by DHL YESTERDAY (Wednesday).  Unbelievable!  That's 5 days, including weekends. They even check the boards for mistakes (silkscreen labels too small for good legibility, annular rings around holes too thin, Gerber errors, etc.) and they warn you if they spot something.  I don't understand how they can do it for this price but I'm not complaining.  Standard boards are green but you can upgrade to get colors for $10 more for 5 boards.

The most recent PCB provider I've used is Cheap PCB's which sounds identical to the "ALLPCB" mentioned here. I'd like to join in with whomever decides to place an order. Please let me know if someone is interested in taking this on, and if not, I may consider doing it.

AllPcb had free shipping via DHL so I ordered 10 boards.

Jack-

If you have any extra boards available I'd like to buy one from you. If so, please advise how much and what payment method you prefer. This looks to be a great project.

Phil,

I plan on keeping 2 boards and will send the rest to whoever lets me know --  for shipping and board cost.  When I get the boards I'll post again if they look ok.

At the risk of repeating,
I couldn't find anything cheaper than PCBway (2 layer) and the boards look and solder beautifully
5 boards of a type for $5 See photos
