Hmmm only vector measurement on S11 and scalar S21.

Looks nice though, but guess it still comes with "You get what you pay for" :(

I don't have any experience with the KC901S, but I can strongly recommend a device I have owned and used, the VNWA from SDR kits:
 
 
This is an excellent instrument and the support from the developer and an active Yahoogroup is second to none.  The developer, Thomas Baier DG8SAQ, wrote an article in QEX about it some years ago when he was designing it.  The software he provides is very powerful and he is quick to add features requested by users.  Its unfortunate that this device hasn't become as well known in the States as it deserves to be.

I can thoroughly recommend that DG8SAQ VWNA. DC to 500MHz at full
spec, and performance that goes up to 1.3GHz with a gentle roll off in
capability.


It is possible, although I haven't tried it, to use in conjunction
with external mixers and LO to get one-port measurements at any
microwave frequency the LO / mixer will support
