At VU2ESE, we've been trying to come up a low cost way to transmit GPS coordinates of public transport buses without resorting to GSM. Han's GPS module was the starting point and then a very simple scheme emerged that would allow transmission of RTTY with just a simple crystal oscillator and $4 Arduino nano. As a personal preference, I like to keep digital electronics out of the signal path. However, throwing an Arduino into the control path can really simplify things and even enable new ways of thinking about old things.
