Do you need 1 or 2 air variables?   I have a huge selection that I've accumulated over the years.  Tell me how many and the capacitance and I'll see if I can help you.

why have the have the variable caps disappeared? that's because we have hoarded them up! growing up in RF penury has made me a mean and selfish man. each time I see a valve, a slow motion drive, variable capacitor, my greed takes over and i pursue it with the zeal of the child catcher of chitty chitty bang bang.

now, in my cave, i sleep over my hoard of these gems. no one else shall lay their hands on these! all you junk is now mine!

hahahahahaha ...... (delirious laugher, fade out to intermission! popcorn, anyone?)

comrades,

there were omissions of some connection points and labelling in the
previous diagram. this one has it clarified.
A. both the sources as well as the mid point of the balancing pot go to the
ground.
B. the LO transformer could be anything. It could even be the same old
trifilar transformer that was earlier used with the center tap removed from
the ground and floating. or it could be a simple 1:2 transformer with 5
turns and 10 turns on FT37-43. I used a binocular core as well as a
prewound trifilar transformer (I usually make 10 of them at a time and keep
them in the inductor box).
